Sending an invoice to a Shopify customer, and knowing it went
What Shopify does by default
It sends an order confirmation, full stop — not an invoice. Any invoice document sending is delegated entirely to whatever app or process a merchant has wired in, and Shopify keeps no delivery log for that document, because it never generated one. That gap is where sending quietly breaks: a document can exist and never reach the customer, with nothing in Shopify admin flagging which orders that happened to.
What to check
One merchant turned on an app's "create and send invoices" option and found the document sitting in the order detail — generated, visible, present — while the confirmation email never carried it and no separate email arrived either. They only found out by checking manually, order by order. Another reported invoices landing in customer spam because the sending address wasn't verified: "most of our invoices," in their words, misrouted silently, with no bounce shown anywhere in Shopify admin. For a sample of last month's paid orders: did the customer actually receive one — not "was it generated," but delivered from a verified address that won't be spam-filtered?
What goes wrong at month end
A customer asks for a copy of an invoice they were supposedly sent, or an accountant asks for delivery proof, and the honest answer turns out to be "it was made — we don't know if it arrived."
